FAQ – Rules, Regulations and Standards

We can not tell you what to do, but we can help you understand what you must do

From time to time we get questions about which rules really apply and what happens if they are not followed. This document does not pretend to cover all possible regulations that may apply where you work. Instead we will focus on the overall regulations that it very important to know about.

Does XControl fulfill ISO13849-1?

Yes.

Which rules must be followed for installing Joystick steering on wheeled excavators?

The safety aspects of Joystick steering are regulated in ISO5010 and the electronics in ISO15998. In short the following criteria must be fulfilled in order to be able to install joystick steering on a wheeled excavator.

  1. The normal steering wheel must always be active and have highest priority.
  2. The Joystick steering must be able to be deactivated.
  3. Visual indication needed when Joystick Steering is active.
  4. Speed limit must not exceed 20km/h
  5. It must be impossible to go faster than defined speed with Joystick Steering activated.
  6. The operator must reactivate the joystick steering each time entering the machine.
  7. It the joystick steering is indicating problems it must go to “safemode”, eg. be shut off.
  8. Each vehicle must make a steering course test run to verify max speed with Joystick steering active.

When will the new Standard for quick couplers be valid?

The new standard for quick couplers (ISO13031) is still in a draft version even if it is close to finalization. It is possible that the new standard will be effective some time during 2012 and it will have a significant impact on some manufacturers.
The new standard is a framework which classifies all different quick coupler models in to a four different types. Each type will have it specific safety requirements.

What is defined by the Symmetrical Standard?

The Symmertical standard is a machine manufacturer independent standard for quick couplers for excavators. It is managed by the Swedish industry organisation  Maskinleverantörerna.

The purpose with the S-Standards is to:

  1. Create a standard that is safe, user-friendly and harmonizes with international standards such as EN474 and the coming ISO13031.
  2. Create a competitive and open industry standard that is not controlled by a single producer but instead controlled by of a recognized and independent industry association.
  3. Create a uniform nomenclature for naming of Quick Couplers of different sizes within the standard
  4. Create a uniform manufacturing standard for dimensions and tolerances adapted for an efficient production process.
  5. Create a design that makes it cost efficient to retrofit Brackets to used and new buckets and work tools.
  6. Create a design which is suitable for mounting in tiltrotator applications.
  7. Create a standard which maintains the excavators breakout force as much as possible.
  8. Have a Quick Coupler width that harmonizes with most dipper arm dimensions for relevant size intervals.
  9. Eliminate play and the need for manual shimming.
  10. Create a design that allows for future installation of fully automated systems for hydraulic couplings and and electrical cables
  11. Have a design that can be supported by a majority of Swedish and Nordic work tool manufacturers.
